2008 Diamond Certificate Award for the South Service Drive Infrastructure Project
American Council of Engineering Companies

Pennoni Associates Inc. has received the 2008 Diamond Certificate Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) for its work on the South Service Drive Infrastructure Project in Philadelphia, PA. The ACEC/PA Diamond Awards recognize the contributions of Pennsylvania consulting engineering firms for enhancing the social and economical impact of the Commonwealth and its citizens.

Pennoni Associates provided site design services to three locations along South Service Drive in Philadelphia, an area that is being developed into what will become one of the premier research and ambulatory care centers in the country.

South Service Drive runs along a strip of properties owned by the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems (UPHS) which are being expanded upon to strengthen the reach and increase the capabilities of these reputable institutions. Located in the University City section of Philadelphia, these institutions are recognized across the nation as leaders in their respective fields. Penn consistently ranks in the top 10 in U.S. and World Reports list of the best universities in the country. CHOP is consistently considered one of the best hospitals for children in the country. UPHS ranks second in the nation in terms of total research awards to academic medical schools in the US.

All three clients were developing new buildings including research facilities, ambulatory care centers, and one of the country’s few proton therapy centers for cancer research, which posed a challenge as they are all located in a dense urban area. Pennoni was able to work with all interested parties to provide a design that will support infrastructure for seven million square feet of development that may be a place where a cure to a child's disease is discovered, or advancement in cancer treatment is made. The work done in these new facilities will not only help Philadelphia and the surrounding community, but it will help sick children and individuals around the country.

The Zweig Letter 2007 Hot Firm List
zweig

Management consulting and research firm Zweig White Information Services has identified the 200 fastest-growing U.S. architecture, engineering, and environmental consulting firms for its annual ranking, The Zweig Letter Hot Firm List. This annual list features the design and environmental firms that have outperformed the economy and competitors to become industry leaders. This year, Pennoni Associates was ranked number 101.

Mark Zweig, founder and director of ZweigWhite, says, "The firms that made this year's Hot Firm List should be proud. Even with the increase of 100 firms on the list to 200, it was still an incredibly competitive and successful group. Firms that commit to revenue growth while investing in marketing, information technology, and other infrastructure are usually the most successful in our industry. They have shown they have the ability to sustain their success, year after year. The hottest firms in the business—those with consistent growth and success at outperforming the economy and their peers—are the ones that attract top staff and the best clients."

The Zweig Letter 2007 Hot Firm List is based solely on gross revenue for both fiscal year 2003 and fiscal year 2006. Firms were ranked from first to last based on percentage growth and dollar growth. Dollar growth and percentage growth were weighted equally. Each firm's two rankings were added together, and the 200 firms with the lowest combined rankings comprise the list.

Green Roof Design Award - 2007
Stormwater Best Management Practices

Gree Roof

Pennoni Associates is pleased to announce it has won the award for Stormwater Best Management Practices for its green roof design on The Radian, located at 3925 Walnut Street in Philadelphia. The project, being developed by University Partners, broke ground in May. This statewide program; hosted by the Philadelphia Water Department, Office of Watersheds; recognizes innovative stormwater best management practices in Pennsylvania.

The project integrates green roof areas into the public terrace level of a mixed-use facility that includes lower level retail space and a 13-story residential tower for student apartments, opening August 2008. The innovative strategy for stormwater management drains runoff from impervious areas of the roof into the green roof structure, maximizes the water retention on the roof, and controls the release rate into two underground stormwater management basins. Additionally, the plant design of the green roof will serve as a valued amenity to residents and the community at large. Pennoni also designed the streetscape and main entry courtyard for the development.

”This project is an example of how ecology, economics, and aesthetics can be balanced to satisfy not only the owner and the users of the building, but also broader environmental goals,” stated Marc Morfei, Philadelphia Senior Landscape Architect.

The project architect is Erdy McHenry Architecture. Roofscapes, Inc. served as subconsultant to Pennoni and provided key technical expertise for the green roof design.

2007 Diamond Certificate Award for the Everhart Covered Bridge
American Council of Engineering Companies

Pennoni Associates Inc. has received the 2007 Diamond Certificate Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) for its work on the Everhart Covered Bridge at Fort Hunter. The ACEC/PA Diamond Awards recognize the contributions of Pennsylvania consulting engineering firms for enhancing the social and economical impact of the Commonwealth and its citizens.

The Everhart Covered Bridge was originally constructed in Perry County in 1881 to span Little Buffalo Creek in Oliver Township. The bridge was functional for over 60 years in its Perry County location, but, as the years went by, the bridge became outdated. In 1941, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation determined it should be replaced to meet new traffic demands. Determined to preserve the bridge, local resident Mrs. Margaret Wister Meigs, the preserver of Fort Hunter in Dauphin County, purchased the structure for $700 and saved it from demolition.

In 1980, the Meigs family donated the land to Dauphin County, and during park development the bridge was dismantled and placed in storage. In 2003, the current director of Fort Hunter Mansion and Park decided to resurrect the bridge and retained Pennoni Associates Inc. to provide the engineering services.

During preliminary studies, Pennoni discovered many rotted and ruined structural elements. The Pennoni team inventoried and studied the original components of the covered bridge and used these elements as the template for the replication. Components that could be salvaged were designated for incorporation into the reconstructed bridge. After 3 years of design and construction, the bridge was dedicated and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 10, 2006.

2007 Diamond Certificate Award for Franklin Square
American Council of Engineering Companies

Pennoni Associates Inc. has received the 2007 Diamond Certificate Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) for its work on the Revitalization of Franklin Square in Philadelphia, PA. The ACEC/PA Diamond Awards recognize the contributions of Pennsylvania consulting engineering firms for enhancing the social and economical impact of the Commonwealth and its citizens.

The history of Franklin Square dates back 300 years to when William Penn completed his city plan which included five squares of open green space or as he wrote, “havens of respite in a busy world.”  The fifth square in Penn’s plan was “North East Publick Square,” re-named in 1825 to honor Philadelphia’s favorite son, Benjamin Franklin.  This fifth square has never enjoyed the same reputation and fame shared by the other four squares, and has until recently been left vacant by visitors and residents alike, and become isolated by roads, expressways, and a bridge. While the other squares have abundant daily activity and development, Franklin Square has been neglected.

In 2004, Franklin Square was re-discovered as a diamond-in-the-rough by Once Upon A Nation, an initiative that promotes and educates about the history of Philadelphia.  This once-neglected piece of our City’s history now boasts a new carousel, two playgrounds, and a miniature golf course among other amenities. It has been restored to one of the “havens of respite” originally intended by William Penn, and is now yet another landmark of which the people of Philadelphia can be proud.

2007 Diamond Certificate Award for the Cira Centre
American Council of Engineering Companies

Pennoni Associates Inc. has received the 2007 Diamond Certificate Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) for its work on the Cira Center in Philadelphia, PA. The ACEC/PA Diamond Awards recognize the contributions of Pennsylvania consulting engineering firms for enhancing the social and economical impact of the Commonwealth and its citizens.

Pennoni Associates Inc., working for client Brandywine Realty Trust, provided site/civil engineering, survey, environmental, geotechnical, and construction inspection services for the design and construction of the Cira Centre.

Located at 2929 Arch Street, the Cira Centre is the first new skyscraper completed in Philadelphia in more than 15 years. The visionary design and striking location of the building has already made the Cira Centre a landmark for the City, and it represents the future of the City of Philadelphia and a revival for several surrounding sections of the City.

As Jerry Sweeny, President and CEO of Brandywine, says, “Cira is so much more than a building. It is a testament to and a symbol of Philadelphia’s vitality at the beginning of this millennium, proof of what can happen when many come together on behalf of an idea and commit to seeing it through.” The design and construction of a structure the size of Cira on any site would pose challenges, but the site chosen for Cira was especially challenging for a number of reasons. These engineering challenges caused many others to abandon their plans to develop the site, but Pennoni was dedicated to help fulfill Brandywine’s desire to build at their location of choice. Pennoni’s innovative and forward-thinking solutions enabled the design and construction of the Cira Center, as the client envisioned, to become a reality.

2006 Delaware Valley Outstanding Engineer Achievement
Delaware Valley Engineers Week Council

It is safe to say that the skyline of Philadelphia will never be the same. Completed in November 2005, the visionary design and striking location of Philadelphia’s newest skyscraper has already made the Cira Centre a landmark for the City. As the first new office tower completed in area in almost 15 years, the Cira Centre represents the future of the City of Philadelphia and a revival for several surrounding sections of the City.

Pennoni Associates Inc., working for client Brandywine Realty Trust, provided site/civil engineering, survey, environmental, geotechnical, and construction inspection services for the design of the Cira Centre. While building a structure the size of Cira on any site would pose challenges, the site chosen for Cira was especially challenging for a number of reasons. Pennoni’s innovative and forward thinking engineering work enabled the design and construction of Cira to become a reality, and led to the Cira Centre’s selection as the 2006 Outstanding Engineering Achievement award by the Delaware Valley Engineers’ Week Council.

World-renowned architects Cesar Pelli & Associates (now known as Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects) were the Design Architects for the Cira Center, and created a building like no other the City has seen. Cira expands downtown Philadelphia across the Schuylkill River into a new region occupied by 30th Street Station, the University of Pennsylvania, and Drexel University, linking business to the research, education, and culture offered by these two fine universities. Located at 2929 Arch Street, Cira was constructed in a portion of Amtrak’s North Parking Deck within the former Amtrak Rail yard. It is directly connected to 30th Street Station via a pedestrian bridge across Arch Street through the upper level, and is adjacent to the new Amtrak parking facility. While this site made the building accessible from all modes of transportation, including rail, car, subway, trolley, bus, and taxi, it presented significant civil engineering challenges.

The Amtrak Rail yard site was the proposed site for several large building projects over the last 40 years. In the late 1960s, it was looked at and ruled out as a potential site for Veteran’s Stadium, and in the 1980s it was proposed as a location for the Pennsylvania Convention Center. While both of these large facilities were eventually built on other sites, close examination began of the air rights above the tracks to determine the potential for future development. In 2002, when Brandywine was awarded the development rights for the parcel north of the station, Pennoni began the huge undertaking of designing a site plan to accommodate a major office building on this long-neglected site.

Looking at the site from street level can be deceiving: the site may look routine, but in actuality it is not. Arch Street is located on an elevated deck about 20 feet above the Amtrak Rail Yard. The yard is filled with overhead high-voltage power lines that feed the trains coming and going from 30th Street Station. These lines provide enough electricity for the trains, but were of little use in powering a 29-story skyscraper. In addition, the rail yard did not have adequate utility infrastructure for telecommunications, water, or sewer. On a normal City site, those necessary utilities could be pulled from public services within the street, but Arch Street did not contain the necessary utility infrastructure. Pennoni discovered that sufficient utilities were located on Market Street, about 900 feet away from the site.

Pennoni devised several possible alternatives to get utilities to the site. The goal was to provide the site with the most reliable services possible while maintaining cost effectiveness. Pennoni decided that bringing utilities from several different locations would provide the most dependable services, with a large percentage of the necessary utilities coming through the existing infrastructure running beneath 30th Street Station. Pennoni reused this old infrastructure and designed a concept for primary services that ran domestic water, fire, sewer, electric, and telecommunications through these tunnels, bringing them 900 feet from Market Street to the site.

In order to bring Brandywine’s concept of a top-of-the-line, cutting-edge space to life, Pennoni needed to provide the site with redundant utility services. To do so, limited secondary utilities were drawn from Amtrak’s existing usable facilities.

Successfully bringing utilities to the site was accomplished in spite of several other engineering challenges that the selected property posed. These challenges included very limited construction and loading access due to the positioning of the site between active rails, a newly constructed parking garage, and a highly trafficked city street, as well as configuring the necessary relocated utilities within the limited amount of bordering space surrounding the footprint of the proposed building.

When looking at the Cira Centre’s bold and dramatic architectural design, it is easy to forget about all of the engineering work required to bring such a building to fruition. The work performed on the Cira Centre clearly demonstrates the importance of engineering in shaping the future of today’s society. While all aspects of the selected site were appealing to the client, the location created a utility nightmare for the Civil Engineer. By stepping away from the problem and looking at the project as a complete system with the surrounding area, Pennoni was able to solve the challenge and enable the project to move forward at the preferred site. Without the adaptive reuse application for some of the existing rail yard infrastructure designed by Pennoni Associates, the Cira Center would not have been possible.
Thanks to the talents and diligence of the project team, the Philadelphia skyline has been redefined. The Cira Centre is unlike any building that Philadelphia has ever seen, and it represents the evolution of architecture in the Delaware Valley. It is the first in a series of new projects designed to spur the rejuvenation of West Philadelphia, and is leading the way for new businesses to move into the City. Brandywine has taken a once unproductive site and turned it into an investment that will pay dividends long into the City’s future. The design and construction of Cira also marks a return to the growth of business in the City, as most of the multi-story construction taking place in the City over the last few years has been for residential projects. The potential for office space that is easily accessible from anywhere in the northeastern United States will help to draw people from outside the City, increasing revenues for the Delaware Valley. Cira represents the future of the Delaware Valley, and is a landmark that all of us who live and work here can be proud of.

2006 Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year - Eric Flicker, P.E.
Delaware Valley Engineers Week Council

Eric L. Flicker, Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer for Pennoni Associates Inc., has been named as the 2006 Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year by the Delaware Valley Engineers Week Council.

Growing up in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Eric Flicker learned early that it takes more than just technical skills to develop public works projects. Eric’s father served as a member of the Borough Council in Fleetwood, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and Eric watched as his father and other community leaders struggled to bring to fruition public improvement projects to support and serve their growing community. Seeing these projects develop and better the lives of those around him led to an interest in engineering from an early age, and seeing the way his father worked with the people of Fleetwood towards the betterment of the community made Eric committed to continue that legacy.

During high school and while studying engineering at Lehigh University, Eric worked during summer and vacation breaks at Spotts Engineering (now known as Spotts, Stevens and McCoy). His job there confirmed what he already knew: he had not only a love for engineering, but also for non-technical project development, in particular project financing, that helped to improve the world around him. It was also at this time that Eric began his long-time association with ASCE and NSPE, becoming an active member of the student chapters at Lehigh. This early experience helped to sow the seeds for a 40-year career of service to the engineering community.

Having experience in engineering that runs the gamut from project design to project management, from serving as a principal engineer to his current position as CFO of Pennoni Associates Inc., Eric is a true engineering “Jack of all Trades.” While his involvement in the day-to-day practice of engineering has given him years of satisfaction, it is his work in promoting the profession that is his proudest accomplishment.

When accepting the state Presidency of PSPE Reading Chapter, Eric promoted the theme of “Proud to be a P.E.,” seeking to gain recognition for the profession. In this role, he initiated joint meetings with other technical and professional societies in an effort to find ways to cooperatively serve the public and the profession. As the Elected National Chairman of HWAC, Eric gave Congressional testimony on issues of hazardous waste practices. Working with ACEC-PA, PSLS, and PSPE, Eric served as the Founding Chairman of the Board for the Pennsylvania Design Association Center, designed as a single joint resource to serve the engineering profession across Pennsylvania.

As National Chairman of ACEC, Eric strived to find ways to develop more cooperative ventures among the often fragmented engineering profession. He represented ACEC with peer and technical societies, and met with Congressional and Administration leaders to promote our profession and seek support in dealing with engineering’s unique business needs.

While Eric has been privileged in his career to have the opportunity to meet with many of the most important people in national, state, and local government, he is equally as comfortable dealing with members of the community, and especially enjoys service that enables him to bring the message and values of the engineering profession to children. He served as the Founding State Coordinator for MathCounts in Pennsylvania, and has been a constant supporter of the event for over 20 years. He serves year after year as the Countdown Round Moderator, and plans to continue his involvement for years to come. Through his participation in the Habitat for Humanity Build a House, Build a Dream competition, Eric encourages youth to see the value and importance of the engineering profession. He also actively brings the engineering community to this worthwhile event by recruiting his engineering peers as judges and sponsors of the event.

Eric L. Flicker, P.E., embodies the spirit intended for recognition as the Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year. Many in the engineering community have technical credentials that make them outstanding members of the profession; few have stepped beyond the technical realm and reached into their communities to represent the engineer as a leader. Eric has spent more than 40 years bringing engineering out of the office and into the community. Through consistent industry involvement, community service, and an in-depth knowledge of the profession, he has served as an ambassador for engineering on a local, regional, state, and national level. Eric is equally comfortable speaking to a group of peers, meeting with senior politicians in Washington to discuss policy, or working with middle school student Mathletes. He is a constant force in the engineering world; a face that his clients, peers, and community have come to rely on as a trusted advisor.

The Delaware Valley Engineer’s Week Council sets an example for the nation of how a multi-state, multi-organization program can be successful. Eric’s continuing work towards unifying the profession by involving all of the professional and technical groups in efforts to represent the engineering community makes him an outstanding choice for the 2006 Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year.
