Baltimore Pike Traffic Adaptive System

Baltimore Pike Traffic Adaptive System

Pennoni prepared and submitted an Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) grant application for a traffic adaptive system along Baltimore Pike (Route 1), which was awarded. The project involved the installation of traffic adaptive equipment at five signatlized intersections and connection of the system to PennDOT's Traffic Management Center in King of Prussia. The Baltimore Pike system installed as part of this project utilizes leading edge technology to constantly adjust signal timings and coordination settings through the use of video detection cameras. The cameras identify volume, queuing and wait times for each approach lane, and an Ethernet-based processor at each intersection selects movement sequencing and duration to minimize delay. The processors at each intersection also communicate with adjacent intersections to allow groups of vehicles to progress along the corridor with minimal stoppages.
