Belmont Avenue Pump Station Emergency Generator

Belmont Avenue Pump Station Emergency Generator

Pennoni designed a number of electrical upgrades to this 2,300 gpm pump station. Initially, the 600 kW emergency generator was replaced. The latest work involved the replacement the station’s 200 horsepower soft starters with 250 horsepower variable frequency drives (VFD). The pump station uses dual low-high pressure pumps in series to achieve the required high discharge heads. During the hydraulic analysis for the station, it was determined that the present brake-horse power of the pumps was 198 BHP and if dry pit submersible pumps were used as a future replacement, with slightly less efficiency, the larger VFD’s would be necessary.

This project included the installation of a new 500 kVA utility transformer and upgraded switchgear, three 250 HP VFD’s with soft starter bypass, new pump control panel, and level instruments.

Pennoni was responsible for the hydraulic analysis, planning, final design, and development of contract documents, as well as construction management and inspection services.
