Emergency Inspection and Monitoring of Bridge 1-813, I-495 over the Christiana RIver
Pennoni and Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (IIS) provided emergency inspection and monitoring of the superstructure and substructure of Bridge 1-813 carrying Interstate 495 in Wilmington, DE. Transverse rotations up to 4% from their original position were observed in Piers 11 through 14 causing the median barriers to be vertically out of alignment by as much as 17 inches. It was determined that a large earth embankment placed immediately adjacent to the structure, caused compression of the underlying soft soils and lateral pressure on the bridge foundations. Tilt sensors were installed to continuously monitor pier rotations via real-time data collection and data was collected within 12 hours of the initial call from DelDOT. The bridge was re-opened to traffic within two months and long-term monitoring will continue into the future.
