RABIT™ Bridge Deck Assessment Tool Peer Review

Pennoni’s Intelligent Infrastructure Systems (IIS) assisted Rutgers University’s Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) with peer review services for the RABIT™ development and design team.  The scope included interviews and review of Technical Design Requirements (TDR), review of RABIT™’s documentation and reporting the recommendations to improve the quality of design, data collection, fabrication, and operation of the tool.

RABIT™ is a robotic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) platform designed to enhance the assessment of bridge decks and was developed as part of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) program.  RABIT™ includes high resolution cameras and imaging systems, Electrical Resistivity to characterize the corrosive environment of concrete, Impact Echo and Ultrasonic Surface Waves to evaluate concrete delamination and concrete deck strength, Ground Penetrating Radar to map rebar and other metallic objects below the surface, and a Global Positioning System to record and mark location data.
