Denis P. O’Brien
2011
Executive Vice President of Exelon Corporation and President and Chief Executive Officer of PECO

The recipient of the 2011 Ellipse Award is Denis P. O’Brien Executive Vice President of Exelon Corporation and President and Chief Executive Officer of PECO. Denis is responsible for leadership of operations and overall performance associated with service reliability, customer satisfaction, financial management, and regulatory and external affairs. Based in Philadelphia, PECO is Pennsylvania’s largest electric and natural gas utility. PECO employs about 2,400 people, owns $9 billion in assets, and generates approximately $5.6 billion in annual revenues. PECO serves 1.6 million electric and 486,000 gas customers in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Under Denis’ leadership, the company launched PECO Smart Ideas, a suite of energy efficiency programs. Since October 2009, PECO customers have saved more than $199 million in energy costs, and are on the way to reducing overall energy usage by 1% by the end of 2011. This energy savings has the same environmental impact as not driving about 457 million miles or planting nearly 440,000 trees. Also under Denis’ leadership, the company launched an initiative to preserve the environment through the greening of its own operations. The comprehensive program includes the installation of a green roof and a new LED Crown Lights system at the company’s Center City headquarters as well as the greening of the company’s fleet of vehicles to include hybrid, bio-diesel and electric vehicles. The company also has received LEED certification for five of its buildings and is working to secure LEED certification for five additional company buildings.

PECO’s commitment to helping its customers better manage their energy usage, coupled with its capital investment in key energy infrastructure, have thrived under Denis’ leadership. Denis’ vision of a greener world, as well as his ability to lead change to make that vision a reality, are among the reasons he has been chosen as the recipient of the 2011 Ellipse Award.
O’Brien previously served as executive vice president of Exelon and CEO of Philadelphia-based PECO, Pennsylvania’s largest electric and natural gas utility. O’Brien was appointed to the top leadership position for PECO in 2003 and was named president and CEO in 2007. Prior to becoming CEO of PECO, he served as executive vice president and as vice president for operations with responsibility for engineering, construction, maintenance and emergency response for the company’s natural gas and electric distribution systems.
