Gerard H. Sweeney
The recipient of the 2014 Ellipse Award is Gerard H. Sweeney, President & Chief Executive Officer and Trustee of Brandywine Realty Trust.
Mr. Sweeney has served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Trustee of the company since 1994 and as President since 1988. Brandywine Realty Trust, headquartered in Radnor, PA, is one of the largest, full-service, integrated real estate companies in the nation. Organized as a real estate investment trust (REIT), Brandywine owns, leases, and manages an urban, town center, and suburban office portfolio. Brandywine’s mission to be “Best of Class” has led them to developing some of the nation’s most remarkable Class-A office and mixed-use properties, while at the same time fostering a corporate culture of supporting and giving back to the community.
Brandywine is headquartered in suburban Pennsylvania and has a number of properties throughout the Greater Philadelphia region. However, their footprint extends across the country in core markets including Philadelphia’s central business district (CBD); New Jersey; Delaware; Metro Washington, DC (including Maryland and Northern Virginia); Richmond, Virginia; Austin, Texas and Northern and Southern California. Each region features trophy properties with Class-A amenities that reflect the capital investment that they have made in an effort to bring to their tenants the best working environments possible. Since its founding, Brandywine has invested $1.5 billion in development and redevelopment projects.
Mr. Sweeney has overseen the growth of Brandywine from four properties and a total market capitalization of less than $5 million to over 33 million square feet and a total market capitalization of approximately $4.6 billion. The local infrastructure surrounding these projects is improved each time Brandywine completes one of their signature buildings. In addition to the significant positive impact that Brandywine’s development has had on our region’s infrastructure, Brandywine has made a company-wide commitment to create and maintain sustainable environments for their stakeholders.
Brandywine, under Mr. Sweeney’s leadership, is helping to lead the revitalization and professional repopulation of the City’s urban areas. They have several key projects in planning that will serve to leverage Philadelphia’s transit resources leading to greater density, walkability, and vibrancy in the areas surrounding our rail hubs.
Mr. Sweeney’s legacy of success will benefit generations of Americans to come. His championing of infrastructure as a leading driver for our region’s position as a world-class center of business and industry, as well as his ability to lead change to make that vision a reality, are among the reasons he has been chosen as the recipient of the 2014 Ellipse Award.
