Charlie Mumford Named 2017 Outstanding Younger Member in Community Activities
PHILADELPHIA, PA- Charlie Mumford, graduate bridge engineer in Pennoni’s Newark, DE transportation division has been named ASCE’s 2017 Eastern Region Outstanding Younger Member in Community Activities. Mumford joined Pennoni in July of 2016.
Selected from all ASCE younger members on the entire east coast, Charlie exemplifies a recipient of this award throughout his dedication and hard work engaging the community and volunteering his time. He was named the recipient of the award at ASCE’s Eastern Regional Younger Member Conference held in Newark, NJ. Mumford is very active in Philadelphia’s ASCE Younger Member Forum. Since May of 2015, Mumford has served on the ASCE Philadelphia-YMF board as K-12 Co-Chair, where he directed their efforts in reaching out to a record-setting 1,300 students across Greater Philadelphia in the 2015/2016 school year alone. Mumford actively attends ASCE Philadelphia Section dinner meetings and volunteers with the Philadelphia Section’s education outreach efforts in conjunction with their ASCE Philadelphia-YMF. In addition, Mumford regularly attends Philadelphia SEI Chapter, ASHE Delaware Valley Section, and ASHE First State Section professional dinner meetings as well.
Mumford earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Temple University (2015) as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hebrew and LGBTQ studies (2007). As an engineering student, he developed a strong interest in a structural career focusing in finite element analysis, bridge assessment and design as well as bridge inspections and superstructure replacement. At Temple, he held TA positions in Statics, Civil Engineering Materials and Soil Mechanics Lab. Mumford also delivered the commencement speech upon his graduating from Temple’s College of Engineering, December of 2015. Prior to this, Mumford worked in strategic planning, various grassroots and advocacy campaigns, and education in multiple regions across the United States as a Regional Field Organizer for the Human Rights Campaign. He has also lived and worked abroad in Israel and Mexico. He resides in Philadelphia, PA and is originally from Ocean City, MD.
