Pennoni Selected for Park Project Along New Jersey's Passaic River
Pennoni is pleased to announce its role in the revitalization of the Newark, NJ riverfront as the design engineering consultant for the redevelopment and expansion of Newark’s Riverfront Park. The City of Newark and the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (Newark Community EDC) recently announced the selected project team, led by prime consultant James Corner Field Operations, for whom Pennoni will provide civil, structural, and MEP engineering services.
This project will continue efforts by the City of Newark to create green spaces for the community along New Jersey’s Passaic River. In 2012, Riverfront Park opened on the 16-acre site of a former metal smelting plant. The park features a brightly-painted boardwalk, athletic fields, walking trails, playgrounds, and a dock used for boating tours. This next phase of the project will add an additional mile ( approximately 13 acres) to the existing park, and will aesthetically complement the look and feel of Newark’s riverfront and downtown districts. The park extension will support Newark’s renewal as a world-class destination city and will demonstrate the City’s commitment to growth and innovation for its residents and visitors.
“With a population of more than 280,000, Newark is the largest city in New Jersey,” said Pennoni Project Principal-in-Charge and Newark, NJ Office Director Todd Hay. “As such, it’s important that the City continues to reflect its residents and attract visitors. With its history as an industrial site, and now, with its unique redesign, Riverfront Park caters to both audiences.”
The City of Newark and the Newark Community EDC wish to have the park completed by March 2018.
The City of Newark and Newark Community EDC announced the project team and additional project details during a press conference on June 14, 2016. Pennoni joined City of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and James Corner Field Operations, as well as representatives from Yendor Arts, Nishuane Group, LLC, and VJ Associates, to announce the project to the public.
