Preparing a Spring Training Favorite for Its Next Chapter
For generations of baseball fans, BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida, has been synonymous with spring training and Phillies baseball. Each year, thousands of fans flock to the complex to catch a glimpse of their favorite players, enjoy Florida sunshine and celebrate the start of a new season. Now, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies’ spring training operations is getting an upgrade designed to serve players, staff, and fans for years to come.
Pennoni is providing civil engineering, surveying and landscape architecture services to support a phased modernization of the Phillies Clearwater Complex, helping transform the campus while keeping it fully operational throughout construction.
Behind the scenes, the project involves much more than new facilities and site improvements. The complex sits within a highly active environment bordered by Alligator Creek, public trails, and existing infrastructure that has evolved over decades. Before new additions could take shape, the team had to navigate a maze of underground utilities, coordinate with multiple agencies, and carefully plan improvements to minimize disruptions to daily operations.
The goal is simple: create a safer, more welcoming and more adaptable experience for everyone who uses the ballpark.
To accomplish that, Pennoni designed improvements that strengthen the site’s infrastructure while enhancing accessibility, circulation and long-term flexibility. New pedestrian routes, upgraded roadways, improved drainage and carefully planned utility upgrades will support the complex’s growing needs and future expansion opportunities. Pennoni’s Clearwater structural team is also working with the City of Clearwater to repair the retaining wall supporting the outfield seating berm, extending the team’s contributions to another important part of the ballpark experience.
Equally important, the team developed a construction strategy that allows the facility to remain functional throughout the modernization process. From maintaining emergency access to protecting nearby waterways and existing site features, every phase has been carefully coordinated to keep the complex running smoothly.
While fans may only notice the visible improvements once construction is complete, the project’s success depends on extensive planning and collaboration behind the scenes. Pennoni has worked closely with the Phillies, the City of Clearwater, design partners, utility providers, and regulatory agencies to bring the vision to life.
When complete, the improvements will help ensure BayCare Ballpark remains a premier destination for spring training, community events, and baseball fans of all ages. More than a facilities upgrade, the project represents an investment in the future of a venue that plays an important role in both the Clearwater community and the Phillies organization.
As the next chapter of BayCare Ballpark takes shape, Pennoni is proud to help create a stronger, more resilient home for America’s pastime.
