Inspecting Conditions Across Florida

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)’s continuing mission is to “provide a safe transportation system that ensures the mobility of people and goods, enhances economic prosperity, and preserves the quality of the environment and communities.” This mission can only be accomplished through a transportation system that not only fits the current needs of Florida’s residents and visitors, but also enhances mobility throughout the state to accommodate its consistent and rapid growth.

In 2021, FDOT reported having almost 500 active construction contracts valued at nearly $3.4billion. Success of these projects requires continuous focus on improving quality and safety while reducing the disruption to the travelling public. Often, this results in much of the critical work being done off-site prior to construction in the field. Whether its buildings, bridges, airports, highways or ports, much of the critical structural components of infrastructure projects are fabricated off-site. Before the concrete can be poured or the roads paved, these projects are often dependent on the quality of the fabricated structural materials.

Pennoni’s fabrication inspection team recently won another five-year contract with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for materials inspection. The contract calls for on-call quality assurance inspection during the fabrication and coating of steel bridge and highway structures.

In addition to fabrication and coating inspection, Pennoni’s team performs shop audits, conducts prefabrication meetings and provides guidance and technical support to the DOT for structural materials issues in fabrication, as well as in-service steel highway structures.

As part of this contract, Pennoni is working on the major I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project. An iconic project for the Miami area, the signature bridge changes the city’s skyline and becomes a symbol to the community. The signature bridge and the adjoining structures will allow for the transformation of the area underneath to vibrant community spaces linked together by a contiguous trail for the enjoyment of residents, nearby communities and visitors.

Over the next five years, Pennoni will continue to help FDOT make life for the traveling public of Florida more efficient, safe and convenient.
