Intern & Co-Op Highlight Part 3

Our interns and co-ops are the future of Pennoni and our industry. For our last highlight, we’re showcasing individuals in our West Chester, PA, Lehigh Valley, PA, Newark, NJ, and Philadelphia offices. Lehigh Valley, PA

Michael Roche attends the University of Dayton and will start his junior year in the fall. He is a first-year intern at Pennoni working as a lab technician assisting with concrete and soil testing. Michael is enjoying his internship and is looking forward to graduate with a civil engineering degree in the coming years.

Hunter Reiss is interning with Pennoni for the second year. He is working in the civil/site group preparing land development plans, easement descriptions, and improving his AutoCad Civil 3D skills. Hunter just finished his freshman year at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Tucker Bayda is an intern with our civil/site group. He is working in AutoCad Civil 3D to prepare land development plans and easement descriptions. He is also assisting the Transportation group to prepare exhibits and tables for transportation impact studies. Tucker just finished his freshman year at Lehigh University.

Chase Gallick started working with the structural department after graduating from Lehigh University as part of a co-op program while finishing his Master of Engineering in structural engineering. Over the summer, Chase was working full time, and plans on continuing part time while taking classes and finishing up his wrestling career for the Mountain Hawks. Chase has worked on a myriad of different projects, determining loads on and designing the layout of structural systems, as well as going on several site visits for forensic evaluation of existing structures. He has learned a lot from his time here and believes his experiences and the relationships built at Pennoni will undoubtedly help him over the course of his professional career.

West Chester, PA

Anna Wilson is an engineering intern. She is a rising sophomore and will be returning to the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering in the fall. Anna aspires to be a civil engineer in the future, and she has been enjoying her experiences this summer shadowing professional civil engineers. During her internship, she was able to visit and survey construction sites, practice utilizing CAD programs, and meet with many members of the Pennoni staff.

Steven Lewis Jr. is an intern in site design. He will be entering his sophomore year at Penn State University, striving towards a civil engineering degree. Recently, Steven has had the opportunity to work alongside our PFX group, developing models from churches to a hydroponics plant. Steven has worked on surveying data collection, property due diligence and CAD support for PennDOT, and land development projects.

Newark, NJ

Kaitlin Flanegan is currently enrolled in the engineering program at Cumberland County College where she plans on obtaining her associates degree. She plans on furthering her education at Rowan and majoring in Civil Engineering.

Shayna Lillis is a construction inspection intern. She goes to University of Massachusetts Amherst and is studying civil engineering. Shayna is the president of Chi Epsilon, Civil Engineering Honor Society, as well as an active ASCE student member.

Kenneth Sumter and Donovan McClary are interns working with our municipal group on a road and sidewalk reconstruction  project in Orange, NJ. This includes coordinating work schedules with the contractors, interacting with the local citizens, and coordinating inspections with Pennoni’s inspection unit.

Philadelphia, PA

Julie Zhao is an engineering intern in the transportation group. She will be entering her senior year at Drexel University’s College of Engineering and is majoring in civil engineering with a minor in architectural engineering. Julie has been exposed to several engineering related tasks including: Concept mapping and utility mapping, ADA curb ramps, and using CADD to revise base plans and preliminary design plans for several Philadelphia Water Department projects.

Melissa Liebel is a human resources intern. She graduated from Temple University’s Fox School of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a concentration in human resource management. She has been involved in the recruiting side of HR and being the liaison between managers and prospective candidates. Most recently, Melissa has been in the process of improving our intern & co-op program by assisting in piloting our intern & co-op syllabus which provides a snapshot of expectations and resources.

Nicholas Coughlin is finishing his environmental science degree with a concentration in geography from Kutztown University by completing his internship at Pennoni. As a GIS intern, he has had the opportunity to work on data collection for Penn State’s campus-wide Lighting Study by completing field collection for three campuses. His main project has been developing a web mapp & application for a township ADA Transition plan. Some other involvement includes Concord Township Open Space Map data management, shadowing the environmental group during two oil tank removals and soil sample collection, and more.

Cassidy Bornemann joined the transportation group last fall as a co-op and has been working part time since classes started again. She will be entering her junior year in the College of Engineering at Drexel University. She hopes to specialize in wastewater management and has been working on multiple Philadelphia Water Department projects since joining. Her tasks typically include drafting base plans, completing engineer estimates, updating quantities, and drafting proposed water mains and sewers.

Eric Levine works as an energy data logger intern. He is entering his junior year of college at Penn State University studying supply chain management with a two-piece specialty in finance through the Smeal College of Business. He has been learning how to use OPTICS and entering data, learning how to read invoices and extract the necessary data from them, and sending progress reports to clients.

Kyle Rossi is an engineering intern in our transportation group and returned for his second internship this summer. He will be entering his senior year in the College of Engineering at Penn State University and is thinking of specializing in structural engineering. Kyle was tasked with leading the completion of sewer and water base plans for a Philadelphia Water Department project. He primarily used AutoCAD to draft utilities, design profile views, create cross sections, and format the plan sheets for the project.

Nicholas Gore is an engineering intern in our structural group. He will be entering his senior year in the College of Engineering at Penn State University and is thinking of specializing in structural engineering. Nick has worked on CAD support, REVIT Modeling, and on-site visits to gather information.

Elle Patterson has joined as a dual energy and engineering intern for her second consecutive summer. Elle is from Yardley, PA and is a rising senior at the University of Miami. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and expresses interest in energy management and sustainability. This summer, Elle has held a wide range of responsibilities including researching and contacting potential solar project clients, food waste data analysis for a local town, research for a waste heat recovery project, and multiple interval electric data analyses.

Jessica Belko is a graduate human resources intern. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in industrial organizational psychology at La Salle University and is looking forward to graduating this December. As a former teacher with six years of classroom experience, she is very interested in human behavior and helping individuals set and achieve their goals. In her brief time at Pennoni she has already started exploring recruitment, employee onboarding procedures, and event coordination. She is looking forward to growing in her understanding of HR processes and assisting on projects with each member of the HR team.

Gavin Newcomer is an intern in our MEP group for the third summer. He will be entering his senior year in the College of Engineering at Temple University and is majoring in mechanical engineering and is also a member of the men’s crew team. This summer, Gavin has been exposed to a variety of engineering tasks including: Field surveys, support CADD and Revit tasks, fluid and airflow calculations.

Robert W. Decker joined as an engineering intern in our civil site group. He will be entering his senior year in the College of Engineering at Drexel University and is a dual degree civil and environmental engineering student. Robert has worked on document preparation for a number of projects including a Phase 1 Build Out, lot subdivision, CADD support, and submission compilation.

Frank Tiesi is an engineering intern in our MEP group. He will be entering his third year in the College of Engineering at Drexel University. Frank has worked on several different projects working primarily on plumbing design as well as some mechanical design. He is also helping the MEP team to better standardize their work as well as helping the HR department create a new hire syllabus for his division to help future interns jump into their roles more efficiently.

Kelly Meehan is a GIS intern in our technology solutions group. She is a rising senior at Penn State University in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in geography with certificates in environment and society geography and geographic information systems. She has been involved with numerous tasks including: building the soon-to-be implemented internal data portal site, data collection for Penn State’s campus-wide Lighting Study, observing and sampling an underground storage tank removal with Environmental, as well as help introduce a Women in STEM high school group to Pennoni’s GIS tools and applications.

Michael Rutecki is an accounting clerk. He is entering his senior year in the Lerner College of Business at the University of Delaware. Michael has worked on a variety of accounting tasks including accounts receivables, payables, as well as reviewing expense reports.

Matt Briscella is a graphic design intern with our marketing and corporate communications group and is currently a student at Holy Family University. This is his second year as an intern with Pennoni. This summer Matt has been working on graphics for various marketing projects including social media posts, intranet posts, ads, and more as well as editing and organizing our photo library.
